Her diary was her uncompromising witness with a perfect memory. Lister admits her mistakes, analyses them, and then did not repeat them! What an inspiration! Lister did not expect her diaries to be published, so she was more honest than I can be, but I have a goal that she did not.

I have searched the internet for years and never found a blog treating dreams as a second life. Dreams for me constitute a second life in which certain environments and characters reappear and in which events occur that have long-lasting consequences. As my waking life has settled down and become routine, dreaming is the only life in which I am still learning and developing as a person. It has become primary.

I think that dreaming is the original religion. It is a view into the nature of awareness, which is the sister of any reality. Admittedly, our brains have evolved to process information in certain ways, but there are also purely informatic constraints on processing. For example, logic imposes rules on information processing which are independent of the hardware running those rules. There are also rules about dealing with uncertainty, there are rules regarding abstractness. When your reality is no longer based on physics, but rather on information, you learn the rules of information, just as you once learned as a child the rules of gravity. Those informatic rules are necessarily active in waking life, just less obviously so. In this context, dreaming is mind-blowing and humbling — and practical. It is, in my opinion, some atavistic adventure that we are all meant to have, but which has no place in Western civilisation. We are told, even as children, “It was just a dream…”

For the time being, this blog is my travelogue, a way for me to remember my experiences and to organise them. One day, some one shall search the internet for writings about dreaming as a second life, and this blog shall be there, tucked away in an archive somewhere.

Although this blog is visible on the internet, I use it as a diary to organise my thoughts, much as Anne Lister used her own diary as a confidant.
