Such experiences have led me to a second conclusion: your house is your temple. (This is not the way I have hitherto treated my house.)

But first, let us return to the ordinary mystical realm. Here there are forces of chaos and forces of order. There might be other ways of looking at reality, but logically speaking, this perspective is always valid.

Chaos is the natural reversion of things to disorder. It is the tendency of things to fall apart, like abandoned houses. It is entropy.

Order is the natural tendency of arbitrariness to be sometimes useful. There is exactly one version of order that is compatible with you, the way you are in this instant. All other orders are inimical, synergistic, or orthogonal. At the end of the day, the only order that matters is your own, because it is the only one you can control.

This leaves you in an ocean of chaos dotted by your version of order, an archipelago of allies, and archipelagos of incompatible order. There is some fractal organisation to all this, of course; your order may be embedded in another. Everything in your experience, or imagined experience, can be so described. This is your fundamental situation.

When you wake up, you find yourself in an environment that has been ordered by you, but also by other forces of order and chaos. What it means for you to exist is for you to impose (and reimpose) your order. Without this, your existence is no more possible to prove than that of a ghost. At best, you could be a book-keeping entry in someone else’s order. This is a very heavy realisation, but it changes fundamentally one’s notion of house-keeping. You must impose your order at least in the one place relegated to you. When something becomes dirty or when something breaks, these are opportunities for you to reimpose your order — to exist at a mystical level.

Your existence makes its stamp on its surroundings — whether social or physical — What you see around you is a relief of your existence.

A lump of matter can be said to exist regardless of whether it has any effect on its environment. But does it? If that lump is actually a useless data object in a computer simulation, then what difference is there between it and any other section of unallocated RAM? Bear in mind, the next lump of matter you see is likely exactly that.

Effect Size Matters

If you were to change decorations and colour of a house, that house would still be a house because it functions as a house. If you were to fill the house with concrete, it would cease to be a house. It would be a decorated block of concrete. Religions are said to exist because they have effects on history, not because they occupy any physical space. In other words, the effect things have is a definitional part of their existence. That implies, the more effect a thing has, the more it exists. From a mystical perspective, existence is more of a sliding scale phenomenon than a binary one.

When seen in this light, house-keeping and home improvement take on a spiritual dimension. None of it is annoying. None of it is tiresome. It is your version of saying prayers. If it is repetitive, it is your version of a ritual. It is your religion.

[92
136,58
